A City Theatre World Premiere

Set in Liberty Square, the play follows 14-year-old Liberty City Red and her community as they face displacement from the Pork 'n' Beans projects. Told through poetic vignettes and driven by movement, it explores redlining, redevelopment, and resilience.

From the playwright:

"Liberty City Vignettes began as a series of persona poems when I was a fellow at Callaloo's Creative Writing Workshop under the mentorship of the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Tracy K. Smith. These poems were in the voice of an anonymous narrator and captured the Liberty Square community where I was raised and taught middle school for over a decade. Ms. Smith encouraged me to continue to write, which I did. I strove to explore the spirit and determination of a middle school girl similar to the girls I taught in the Liberty City community. Eventually, I developed the play's protagonist, Liberty City Red."

Lolita developed the play through HOMEGROWN, City Theatre's playwright development program.
