LOOKING BACK
City Theatre's 2022-2023 Season
City Reads
Presented in collaboration with Books & Books with the support of the City of Coral Gables, City Reads welcomed over 300 participants this season. Each event featured a different cast of professional actors reading ten-minute plays connected by themes impacting and reflecting Miami today. Over the course of the five events, audiences gave feedback and joined in conversation with the Artistic Director and actors after the reading. City Theatre created professional opportunities for 60 local artists through this year's season of City Reads!
Heidi Schreck's "What the Constitution Means to Me"
City Theatre's Southeastern Premiere at the Adrienne Arsht Center was a critical success, drawing an audience of over 1,500 patrons. The production featured five student
debate students from local public high schools performing onstage alongside the lead actor. Additionally, two public performances in Key Biscayne broadened access and welcomed an additional 300 attendees.
Short Cuts Tour
This educational theatre program delivered a lineup of four age-appropriate short plays to over 4,000 children across Miami-Dade County. This year's tour reached M-DCPS Public Middle Schools, Miami-Dade Parks Summer Camps, and Miami-Dade Public Libraries across the county.
HOMEGROWN Playwright Development Program
Launched in 2021 through the support of The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at the Miami Foundation. This program nurtures, elevates, and promotes Miami’s emerging playwrights from historically marginalized communities. Recognizing that the stories of many playwrights in Miami are going unwritten and unheard, this program refocuses the American lens through Magic City’s multicultural voices, centering their rich narratives in the theatrical canon. The program culminated with the premiere of their new works at "Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition" at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
HOMEGROWN: Play Reading Series
An important part of the program was the HOMEGROWN: Play Reading Series. Homegrown playwrights presented developing works, free to the community, at play readings held at multiple venues throughout the county. This program successfully engaged nearly 200 individuals in a dialogue about the future of local theatre.
Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition
City Theatre's "Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition" played at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts from June 8 - 25, 2023. City Theatre's signature program featured a lineup of eight, new shprt plays written by Miami playwrights and featured a diverse, local cast of actors. The production highlighted Miami's "homegrown talent" and centered the stories of our community. This production employed 41 theater professionals, including 5 paid college interns, and welcomed over 1,700 attendees.
